New Medicare Requirements Take Effect for Suppliers of Medical Equipment and Supplies
New Standards Prevent Fraud and Promote Quality Care
CMS issued a final reminder about new requirements for most suppliers of durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies (DMEPOS) to meet new quality standards by October 1 and obtain a surety bond by October 2 as required under Federal law. These new supplier enrollment requirements will help to prevent fraud in Medicare and ensure that people with Medicare get high-quality medical items and services from qualified suppliers.

Bid Window Target Date for Round 1 Rebid of Medicare DMEPOS Competitive Bidding Program
On August 3, 2009, CMS issued the bidding timeline for the Round 1 Rebid of the durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS) competitive bidding program and initiated a comprehensive bidder education campaign. The bidding timeline includes a target bid window opening date of October 21, 2009; CMS is currently on schedule to meet this target date. The official opening of the 60 day bid window will be announced via listserv message.

Target DMEPOS Competitive Bidding Registration Deadline for Backup Authorized Officials
CMS would like to remind all suppliers that the target deadline for Backup Authorized Official (BAO) registration was October 9, 2009. If suppliers are interested in participating in the Round 1 Rebid of the DMEPOS competitive bidding program and have registered an Authorized Official (AO) but not a BAO, we strongly recommend that a BAO register TODAY.
