Jurisdiction B News: Supplier Accreditation & Surety Bond Requirement Deadline

DMEPOS Supplier Accreditation and Surety Bond Requirement Deadline Reminders
National Government Services, the Jurisdiction B Durable Medical Equipment Medicare Administrative Contractor (DME MAC) would like to remind Medicare suppliers of durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies (DMEPOS), about the upcoming October 1, 2009 accreditation deadline and the October 2, 2009 surety bond deadline.
All
Medicare DMEPOS suppliers, unless exempt, must be accredited and must obtain a surety bond in order to retain Medicare billing privileges
However, for those suppliers who have made the decision not to obtain accreditation or a surety bond when required or are in the process of obtaining accreditation and meeting the surety bond requirements, but will not meet the October 2009 deadlines, the National Supplier Clearinghouse is recommending suppliers to voluntarily terminate enrollment with Medicare. Suppliers must voluntarily terminate enrollment prior to the October 2009 deadlines mentioned above.
Suppliers can voluntarily terminate enrollment with the Medicare program by completing the sections associated with voluntary termination on page 4 of the Medicare enrollment application (CMS-855S). Once complete, the CMS 855-S must be signed, dated and sent to the National Supplier Clearinghouse. Suppliers who voluntarily terminate their Medicare enrollment, preserve the right to re-enroll in the Medicare program once these requirements have been met and when they are fully compliant with the current supplier standards. Normal processing guidelines will apply, including a site visit if necessary.
Suppliers who fail to comply with the accreditation and surety bond requirements and do not submit a voluntary termination, are subject to the revocation of their Medicare billing privileges with a bar from reenrolling into the program for a period of not less than 1 year.
Suppliers who do not plan to stay enrolled in Medicare are strongly encouraged to notify their beneficiaries as soon as possible so they can find another supplier.

Suppliers interested in submitting a bid for a product category in a competitive bidding area (CBA) are also reminded that they must meet all DMEPOS state licensure requirements, must be accredited by a CMS-approved accreditation organization, and lastly must be bonded, if applicable,  in order to bid in the DMEPOS competitive bidding program.
For additional information regarding DMEPOS accreditation, provisions associated with a surety bond, or the DMEPOS competitive bidding program, visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Web site at:
www.cms.hhs.gov.
